Curriculum Intent
At Beresford Memorial CE First School, our vision is to inspire all children to flourish and achieve their God given potential, whilst loving and learning together with God. We believe in teaching lessons that are exciting, creative and inspiring to our pupils within a Christian context. At Beresford Memorial we use a topic based approach to our teaching and we utilise our outdoor learning provision where possible, to further enhance our teaching and learning opportunities.
Our curriculum has been designed and personalised to best suit our school context and local community. The essential elements threaded throughout our curriculum are; Social and Emotional Awareness, Possibilities, Creativity, Global Awareness, British Values, Community and Spirituality.
These curriculum essentials, along with our school’s Christian values of Honesty, Kindness, Hope, Respect, Creativity and Courage are embedded in everything we teach.
We will:
- Teach our adults and children global awareness to respect people from all faiths and cultures in our diverse world, knowing that they have all been created in the image of God.
- Encourage our adults and children to demonstrate British values to show kindness, to know they belong and are nurtured and loved.
- Inspire our adults and children to be ambitious and show creativity in order to achieve their God given potential.
- Provide possibilities and hope within our Christian family, by promoting a happy, safe and secure environment, which thrives on positivity and perseverance.
- Model honesty that reflects our Christian character and provides children with principles that enable them to be a valued member of their community.
- Show courage by promoting a culture of resilience, and social and emotional awareness inspired by a Growth Mindset.
- Provoke enquiry by using the outdoors and the Forest school ethos to inspire, enable ideas, develop spirituality and encourage intrinsic motivation.
Historical data tells us that a large majority of our pupils start their time at Beresford working below age-related expectations in most areas of the curriculum. Our whole school strategic goal is that pupils achieve at least good levels of progress, or better, across the curriculum. We work to ensure that pupils will be at least secure, in their age-related expectations in all areas of the curriculum.
Curriculum Implementation
- Long term planning ensures National Curriculum content coverage for each year group, with highlighted curriculum essential opportunities threaded throughout.
- To ensure that our curriculum is taught progressively across the whole school and within each year group, subject Skills Progression Grids are used to inform teacher’s planning.
Class Teachers plan lessons according to the specific needs of all groups of pupils in their class, and they will ensure that learning tasks are adjusted in order to enable all pupils to access their learning as independently as possible.
Where pupils have SEND, class teachers will know the pupil’s strengths and areas for development, and they will make every effort to provide for these. Pupil’s work may be further differentiated by the class teacher to remove barriers to learning and enable them to access the curriculum more easily.
Specially trained support staff can implement the teachers modified/adapted planning to support the needs of pupils where necessary. Specific resources and strategies will be used to support pupils individually and in groups. Planning and teaching will be adapted on a daily basis if needed to meet a pupil’s learning needs and increase their access to what is on offer.
Cultural Capital
Our curriculum is designed to increase cultural capital for our pupils. Our Enrichment Lead ensures that our curriculum essentials provide opportunities for further enriching and personalising our curriculum.
Importance is placed on:
- acknowledging global, national and local events
- external visits
- visitors
to increase the experiences and opportunities available to our pupils, particularly the most disadvantaged.
Curriculum Impact
The successful design and delivery of our personalised curriculum will ensure that pupils are engaged and motivated to learn, that behaviour is good, that pupils want to come to school to learn and are ultimately, given opportunities to succeed.
Pupils accessing our enriching curriculum will have high expectations and aspirations, opportunities to increase their global awareness, creativity, and spirituality, and will be able to respond creatively to all challenges.
Pupils will achieve at least good levels of progress, or better, across the curriculum and they will work hard to be at least secure, in their age-related expectations in all areas of the curriculum.
Pupils will understand the need for a responsible and caring approach based on British Values and the school’s Christian ethos and values of Respect, Hope, Honesty, Creativity, Kindness and Courage.
Pupils will recognise and demonstrate independently a wide range of life skills promoting a culture of mental resilience, and social and emotional awareness in preparation for life-long learning.
